The previous "rectoversé" page N°4 introduced
you to understanding a "rectoversé" painting with
the vision of its shadow projected on a wall. Let us continue this
approach by examining a larger "rectoversé" painting:
"we are most certainly being looked at."
Apart from the openings, the surfaces of the two full sides are
completely flat, the impression of 'relief' is obtained by effects
that mislead the eye. If the innovative aspect of this painting
is due to the fact that it is double sided, this asserted flatness
of the two sides makes it similar to traditional pictural styles.
This double aspect, traditional and contemporary, is deliberate.
The virtual front is the side you look at. The virtual back is
the side you cannot see simultaneously. You are free to allocate
to one or other of the two sides the status of virtual front or
back.
The third face consists of the openings which cross through the
two full sides. Here, there are five of them. You will note that
they are identical on the two sides. This is why they are called
the third face. They connect the two other sides but, as they are
made up of a vacuum, they are not of the same nature.
The 'ensemble' has a single title which indicates that it
is one and the same painting.
